MetalEtemon’s comeback tour continues despite the unruly attendees, who are escorted off the grounds by the only security staff member who finally bothered to show up. The staff member turns out to be Leomon, who has no hard feelings towards his old friends and doesn’t particularly care for that genre of music anyway. Ogremon, however, is a big fan and was gravely wounded in the prior chaos, so he’s still a little nettled.
They settle in for a break at the relocated restaurant Joe used to work at, which is in utter shambles thanks to the lack of cleanliness standards or staff. Leomon calmly explains to the children why you shouldn’t kill off the entire Health Department, and that it is up to them to restore it so businesses can carry on without being fucking disgusting. MetalEtemon shows up at the restaurant for his final performance, but Zudomon gets too excited and throws his hammer at him, forcing MetalEtemon to retire for medical reasons. Thus, his comeback tour became his farewell tour.
Elsewhere, Taichi and the rest of the crew had broken into Puppetmon’s house, but surprise! The house comes to life, and it is now the one breaking into them! Puppetmon, knowing his house to be temperamental in this way, makes a break for it before running into MetalGarurumon and Yamato. Unfortunately, MetalGarurumon had eaten some questionable appetizers at a nearby restaurant and belches on Puppetmon, killing him instantly. Again: Health Departments exist for a reason.

Narrator: “Taichi and his group take initiative and infiltrate Pinocchimon’s mansion. However, Pinocchimon appeared before Mimi and her group. What’s more, MetalEtemon was somehow revived from the world of darkness. Mimi and the others, along with Ogremon, take an opportunity to escape, but a new Digimon blocks their way. Is he another enemy? Or perhaps…”
Mimi: “Joe and I were tired of all the fighting, so we decided to sit one out. We saw what looked like a giant meatball fall out of the sky. Turns out it was Etemon, ‘cept he was a lot shinier. He was now MetalEtemon, and he was looking for revenge! The other kids were able to get inside of Puppetmon’s mansion, and with the help of some of his unhappy guards, use some of his toys against him. Joe and I found Ogremon, who’d been wounded. When we fixed him up, he couldn’t believe we were being so nice to him. Things seemed fairly quiet for a change – ‘course, ‘quiet’ never lasts long here!”
[This familiar-sounding new feline arrival implores Mimi et al to calm down]
Ogremon: “Hey, you…”
Ogremon: “Wait, I don’t trust him!”
For context: he is growling at everyone in these scenes in the dub…
[MetalEtemon takes down a tree with his tail in his search for them, which honestly seems kind of unnecessary…]
MetalEtemon: “You can’t run away from me!”
MetalEtemon: “Don’t give me any of yer jive, baby! Come out, come out, wherever you are!”
New Feline Arrival: “I’ll explain everything later. Right now, we need to get out of here.”
[Jou, Mimi, Gomamon, and Palmon flee on the newcomer’s back. Ogremon, the only INJURED member of their party, is left to follow on foot]
Ogremon: “Hey, wait! Don’t leave me behind!”
Ogremon: “Aah! Hey, wait up! Don’t leave me here with this whacked-out monkey!”
That’s pretty messed up, actually. He is the only one with a VISIBLE INJURY.
[MetalEtemon catches up to where they had been, finding only their footprints. He is displeased]
MetalEtemon: “Just you wait! I’ll definitely find you!”
MetalEtemon: *laughs* “Supreme! I’m fired up and ready to go on a mean streak!”
Even MetalEtemon agrees!
[Cut back to Jou et al fleeing. They arrive in what looks to be an abandoned and destroyed village]
No dialogue.
Ogremon: “Slow down, you 4-footed giant furball!”
Mimi: “This is more convenient than waiting for a taxi.”
Joe: “If I’d known we were going to go riding, I’d have worn long pants.”
Mimi: “Me, too – I need a side saddle!”
You’re making it worse!
Joe: “This place [the destroyed village] doesn’t look very lively.”
Mimi: “It’s kind of spooky.”
[Gomamon recognises one of the building as the restaurant from which he and Jou unsuccessfully dined-and-dashed and were subsequently enslaved]
Gomamon: “Hey, Jou!”
Jou: “That… this place is..!” (flashback plays without narration)
Gomamon: “Look up there!”
Joe: “… I think I’m gonna barf!” (flashback) “That’s the restaurant where they made me work like a slave! I’m still trying to get that greasy spoon smell out of my sweater.”
MAKING IT WORSE
[Inside the restaurant]
More silence.
Joe: “This place is depressing.”
Mimi: “There’s not even a clean chair to sit on.”
Yeah, the entire staff quit for some reason.
[The new Digimon glows it up and reverts to a face as familiar as his voice]
Gomamon: “Leomon!”
Jou: “I knew it was you!”
Mimi: “You’re alive!” *hugs his arm (his arm is bigger than she is)* “Leomon!”
Gomamon: “Eh? Awesome!”
Joe: “Leomon, you are not going to believe what you missed!”
Mimi: “I can’t believe it’s you!”
I can’t believe Joe just said that to a Digimon that was there for everything they had missed…
Leomon: “It’s been a while, Chosen Children.”
Palmon: ”Leomon, you can evolve?”
Leomon: “Yes. It seems that after I was bathed in the light of the Digivice, I’ve gained the ability to evolve.”
[flashback without voice-over]
Leomon: *strikes the door frame in frustration* “However, I quickly revert. I still cannot control it.”
Leomon: “I am truly happy to have finally returned and help my friends.”
Palmon: “You digivolved.”
Leomon: “A lot has happened to me since being set free of the black gears and their evil power.” [flashback] “Being exposed to the Digivice has now enabled me to digivolve…” [/flashback] *strike* “But there’s one problem: I am unable to control it! I haven’t learned the secret yet. It’s all still new to me.”
It’s pretty clear in the original that when he says he can’t control it, he only means he can’t remain in his evolved form for long. Not specifying so in the dub dialogue could cause confusion, especially because it didn’t look as if he’d reverted involuntarily just then. The implication is that’s why he didn’t try to fight MetalEtemon, though; he knew he couldn’t sustain his form for long enough.
Ogremon: “Ugh! It’s so boring how this stuff always happens to you! But you’re no match for me! Leomon, fight me!”
[Ogremon attacks Leomon, but Leomon quickly subdues him by grabbing his broken arm, which, again, is pretty messed up. Ogremon falls]
Leomon: “Heal that injury first, then we can fight.”
Ogremon: “What makes you special, you oversized doggie chew toy? Let’s just see how many lives you have left, huh?” *growls and charges Leomon* “Scaredy-cat!”
[Ogremon is subdued with incredibly uncool technique]
Leomon: “There is nothing more pathetic than a whiner. Clearly you don’t deserve to be called a Digimon.”
Is this that ‘kind-hearted leadership’ we’d heard about? What the fuck, Leomon? Original Leomon’s line is badass, but dub Leomon’s is just ass!
[Two Digimon hiding in the restaurant accidentally give away their hiding place]
Leomon: “Who’s there? Come out!”
Otamamon: “Spare us!”
Gekomon: “Please spare our lives!”
Mimi: “Huh? You two are…”
Palmon: “It’s Gekomon and Otamamon!”
Leomon: “Who’s in there? Show yourself!”
Otamamon: “Please don’t squish us – we’re friends!”
Gekomon: “The last thing we want is to cause trouble!”
Mimi: “Oh, Palmon, look.”
Palmon: “They delivered the triple hot fudge sundae.”
I’m still waiting on mine!
[Meanwhile, back at Pinocchimon’s mansion, Deramon and Floramon attempt to rain cannon-y death upon their employer]
Deramon: “Fire! Fire! Fire!”
Deramon: “Here he comes!”
Floramon: “Oh, no!”
Deramon: “He’s mad!”
Floramon: “Well, we are shooting at him…”
Can’t he take a joke?!
Taichi: “Hey, come on. Isn’t that enough already?”
Sora: “It’s like all their build-up frustration has finally exploded.”
Tai: “I bet they don’t invite Puppetmon to their birthday parties.”
Sora: “It’s a good thing that they’re finally releasing their hostility.”
Don’t encourage unhealthy behaviour, Sora.
Pinnochimon: “You guys! You went into my house without my permission – I’ll sue you for trespassing!”
Tailmon: “Oh, we got proper permission from the people inside. They’re all gone now, though!”
Puppetmon: “Get out! You guys know you’re not allowed upstairs! My room is off-limits! Plus, I hate sharing my toys!”
Gatomon: “I’d say that you need to learn a little more about good manners. We’re not hurting anything, except maybe you.”
She’s got some good points: they did not break into his house, they have not damaged anything, and he does need to brush up on his manners!
[Taichi et al kick open the front doors of the mansion (from inside) to confront Pinocchimon]
Taichi: “All right, let’s settle this, Pinocchimon!”
Tai: “We’ve had it with you, Puppetmon! You’re toast!”
Your manners are nothing to brag about, either, Tai!
Pinocchimon: “Heh, I get it. If you want to play so much, we’ll face off over here!” *runs off*
Taichi: “Pinocchimon, wait!”
Puppetmon: “So now you want to play, huh? How about a game of ‘follow the leader’?”
Taichi: “Come back here, you puny toothpick! You play with us, and you’re gonna lose!”
Case in point: AGAIN with the wood-specific slurs…
[They chase after Pinocchimon because that’s definitely not a trap. Then red Digimon erupt from out of the ground. The “not a trap” thing may have been a slight miscalculation]
Agumon: “T-Taichi…”
Tailmon: “D-damnit!”
Puppetmon: *laughs* “Morons! See, Takeru? I wasn’t lying – I do have friends!” *laughs* “Get them, RedVegimon!”
Agumon: “Huh? It’s a trick.”
Gatomon: “Not our best move…”
Puppetmon: *laughs* “Well put, punk! See, T.K.? I have friends after all! The problem is: they don’t like you!” *laughs* “And what they don’t like, they destroy.”
Gatomon’s “not our best move” was delivered with quiet horror and a tinge of embarrassment, which was honestly impressive.

In the original, the RedVegimon reply to Pinocchimon’s order in unison with an unenthusiastic, “okay”. It just sounds cute and funny in the context of the scene. In the dub, they answer, “yes, boss” with a little more gusto.

Narrator: “With ripened red bodies, this Digimon is an enhanced version of Vegimon. They will appear anywhere at Pinocchimon’s command.”
Tai: “RedVegiemon have extremely volatile tempers – that’s why their faces are always red. Not exactly the friendly type.”
That’s the way they’re supposed to look, you racist ass!

Taichi: “All right, everyone evolve!”
Tai: “It’s time to do some weed-whacking!”
And now with the vegetation-based slurs!

As if you needed the reminder: Otamamon and Gekomon have verbal quirks in which they add ‘tama’ and ‘geko’ to the ends of their sentences respectively. I don’t include when I write out the lines because though ‘geko’ could be translated as ‘croak’, ‘tama’ 「玉」 means ‘ball’ (from otamajakushi 「お玉杓子」, which means ‘tadpole’), which is not a noise. Otamamon is just ballin’.

[Meanwhile, back in the restaurant, Leomon explains that he’s been searching for the Chosen Children, whose power they need to defeat the Dark Masters]
Mimi: “Then we should have been fighting the Dark Masters from the beginning. Why did we start on File Island instead..?”
Ogremon: *laughs* “Are you stupid? If you’d faced the Dark Masters that early, you’d have been wasted in a flash!”
Mimi: “But… so many Digimon wouldn’t have had to die for us…”
Mimi: “Are you saying we wasted our time fighting everyone else? I mean, I could have stained my clothes with perspiration!”
Ogremon: *laughs* “Listen, girlie, if you would’ve fought those guys at the start, you would’ve broken way more than just a sweat.”
Mimi: “Maybe, but what about the good Digimon on File Island that sacrificed themselves to help us?”
I feel like dub Mimi’s line, ‘are you saying we wasted our time fighting everyone else?’ could have benefitted from the context that was moved to her later line – specifically, that they’d started on File Island and had to work their way up from Devimon. We’re all concerned about perspiration stains, but this would have been the time to put those concerns aside, for clarity’s sake.
Leomon: “Well, I don’t really understand it, but there must be a reason you first appeared on File Island. Like a ‘trial’ for you all.”
Palmon: “A trial?”
Leomon: “Yes. To see if the Chosen Children were really the saviors of this world. If Devimon had defeated you, that would be that. But you all overcame the challenge brilliantly, and you’ve grown to the point where you can face the Dark Masters. Now is the time to defeat the Dark Masters.”
Leomon: “This is true.
Joe: “What do you mean?”
Leomon: “I think you were brought to File Island to prove that you were capable of working as a team. It could have been a test to make sure that you were the Digidestined.”
Palmon: “Did we pass?”
Leomon: “One of you did. It actually makes sense: if Devimon had defeated you, you would not be ready for this bigger challenge.”
If Devimon had defeated them, they’d be dead. I’d file that under “not ready”!
Leomon: “Devimon’s power was nothing compared to the Dark Master’s; he was merely the beginning. But you’ve proven yourselves over and over by defeating one evil Digimon after another. You’re ready to take on the Dark Masters.”
Leomon: “Where are the other Children? We must gather them quickly.”
Joe: “About that, we’ve sort of gone our separate ways…”
Leomon: “’Separate ways’?”
Joe: “We’re in the middle of a trial…”
Leomon: “Come on, we must find your friends immediately! So tell me, where did they go? We can’t do this all alone.”
Joe: “Some of us needed a ‘timeout’ from each other. You know how it is.”
Leomon: “You needed a ‘timeout’? In the middle of a war?!”
Joe: (flippantly) “Yeah, you might say it’s another kind of test!”
DIGIMON ARE DYING, JOE.

So, this is weird. When we come back to the RedVegiemon fight, the dub reorders the scenes so we see Kabuterimon’s attack first, then Birdramon’s. In the original, we saw Birdramon‘s attack first and the RedVegiemon hopping around on fire, then Kabuterimon‘s attack. The rest of the battle proceeds in the same order.

Back at the Puppetmon pursuit, Angemon’s special attack now has a name in the dub – “Hand of Fate”. It hadn’t been officially named when he’d fought Devimon; he just said, “I’ll stop you! AAIIIEE” and it worked for some reason. He does keep an extra “AaOOF!” after he says “Hand of Fate”. The attack is Heaven’s Knuckle in the original.

(<1 sec) There’s a quick cut when AtlurKabuterimon‘s Horn Buster hits Pinocchimon, and we see more of the explosion. In the dub, the frames between the impact and the grey cloud that covers the screen are cut out.

[The RedVegimon get their buds handed to them by Kabuterimon, Birdramon, Angemon, and Tailmon]
Pinocchimon: “What are you doing?! You guys are just useless!”
Puppetmon: “You guys are about as useful as a load of stinky, rotten vegetables. I’ve had it with you!”
You knew that when you hired them!

WarGreymon uses a new attack, Dramon Killer, which Pinocchimon easily blocked with Bullet Hammer – no surprise as Pinocchimon is not a -dramon.
In the dub, WarGreymon calls this attack Terra Force, making him slightly more aware of what Dramon Killer is for than his original counterpart, but still less aware of what his attacks are actually called.

[Agumon has warp-evolved to WarGreymon and joined the assault]
Pinocchimon: “I’ll do this to you!” *attaches his magic puppet strings to WarGreymon and forces him to turn around*
WarGreymon: “Ugh, my body is moving on its own!”
Puppetmon: “Think you’re so smart? Nobody toys with me.” *strings*
WarGreymon: “He’s got me strung up!” *turn*
Puppetmon: “The enemy’s that way!”
[Pinocchimon has WarGreymon pursue Sora and Koushirou]
WarGreymon: “Run quickly!”
WarGreymon: “Keep running, kids – I don’t want to catch you!”
Again: MAKING IT WORSE

Speaking of ‘making it worse’, there’s a new song in place of ‘Hey, Digimon’ and… what the fresh hell even is this?!
I mean… I guess I like it better than “Hey, Digimon”. It’s got a more serious tone to it, which works better for battle scenes. It fits better with the theme song and rest of the background music.
Also, it’s not “Hey, Digimon”. I tentatively approve!

[The Perfect-level Digimon loom menacingly over Pinocchimon, his hammer having been destroyed by Garudamon]
Pinocchimon: “… wh-what is this?!”
Taichi: “Pinocchimon, the battle is over!”
Puppetmon: “I-I’m not afraid of you! I’ll get you!”
Tai: “If I were you, I’d reconsider!”
[Pinocchimon recalls his previous conversation with Jureimon]
[flashback]
Jureimon: “Be wary of the Chosen Children. If you underestimate them, even you, Lord Pinocchimon, might lose.”
Pinocchimon: “You say I would lose?”
Jureimon: “Lord Pinocchimon, they have something you are missing.”
[/flashback]
Pinocchimon: (thinking) “What am I missing? Hmph! No such thing!” (aloud) “Idiots! Don’t think that’s enough to win! I’ll beat you!”
[flashback]
Cherrymon: “Wait – we must be careful! The Digidestined are strong — stronger than I suspected. Don’t underestimate them, Puppetmon, or it could be disastrous!”
Puppetmon: “What? Spit it out already! Are you saying that I might lose?”
Cherrymon: “I’m only saying: take them seriously. The Digidestined have something you don’t.”
[/flashback]
Puppetmon: “Hmm? What does he mean by that? I got more powers than they ever will. Fools, I’m never going to lose to you. Watch!”
I read somewhere that Jeff Nimoy hated doing Cherrymon’s voice. I don’t know if it’s true, but it makes it way funnier.

Pinocchimon’s recollection of his conversation with Jureimon is different between episode 44 and this one – in both versions. In the original: in episode 44, Jureimon’s warning was more urgent, but his tone is calm in Pinocchimon’s recollection.
In the dub, the dialogue itself is different, and Cherrymon’s tone is more urgent in Puppetmon’s recollection than it was in episode 44.
Episode 44:
Cherrymon: “Wait a minute, we gotta be careful! The Digidestined are strong — stronger than I suspected and to underestimate them could be disastrous!”
Puppetmon: “What?! Are you saying… I might lose?”
Cherrymon: “I’m only saying that I think you should take them seriously. There’s something about them!”

[Pinocchimon eye-beams and his house turns into a semi-autonomous robot somehow]
Pinocchimon: (to his house) “Beat them!”
Puppetmon: “♪ I know something you don’t ♪”
It’s that his house is a robot. Or it’s alive and responsive to eye beams? We may never know.

In both versions, the house roars after it turns into a robot. Yeah, it sounds funnier in the dub because roars always do, but I feel like the house roaring was a silly touch in general.

House parties will never be the same…

[MetalEtemon arrives that the dilapidated restaurant where Mimi et al have been hiding]
MetalEtemon: *cackles*
[cut to inside the restaurant]
Leomon: “Everyone, be careful!”
Ogremon: “He’s here.”
MetalEtemon: “It’s showtime, baby!”
[cut to inside the restaurant]
Leomon: “Hmm? It’s MetalEtemon!”
Ogremon: “He never quits!”
[MetalEtemon breaks down to door to confront them}
MetalEtemon: “I finally found you! Now I’ll get plenty of revenge!”
Leomon: “MetalEtemon, I’m your opponent!”
MetalEtemon: “You tryin’ to pull a number on me, bro? Well, I’m going to lay it on the line ’cause I’m so fine!”
Leomon: “Deal with me – then we shall see who’s fine!”
… Uh…
[SaberLeomon bursts through the wall of the restaurant alone instead of using the door… or attacking MetalEtemon… or not doing further damage to the structural integrity of the building…]
MetalEtemon: “Excellent! I won’t show mercy to anyone who gets in my way!”
MetalEtemon: “Whoa! Well, I see we been taking our vitamins, but it’s time to put the cat out with the garbage.”

Narrator: “SaberLeomon: Leomon’s Ultimate form. His special attack is Infinity Arrow.”
Gomamon: “SaberLeomon may have a heart of gold, but he’ll crush opponents with his claws of steel.”
SaberLeomon’s special attacks are Infinity Arrow, as mentioned in the Digimon Analyzer, and Nail Crusher. In the dub, Infinity Arrow is renamed to “Twin Fang”, and the latter is renamed “Howling Crusher”.

For some reason, where MetalEtemon uses Number One Punch in the original, the dub has him saying ‘Banana Slip’ instead of ‘Metal Punch’.
MetalEtemon has two more special attacks: one in which he hits the enemy with his hip, succinctly named Full Metal Hip Attack. The second is Dark Spirits Deluxe, which is the black zappy blob thingy. Full Metal Hip Attack becomes his “Metal Punch” (but with his booty) in the dub, and Dark Spirits Deluxe isn’t named at all.

(1 sec) The actual impact of Full Metal Hip Attack is cut from the dub. Once again, the cut is so smooth that you would never even know it happened!

[SaberLeomon and MetalEtemon battle. Ogremon tries to step in]
Ogremon: “Wait! I’m the one who will defeat Leomon!”
MetalEtemon: *turns to look at him* “What?”
SaberLeomon: “Stop, Ogremon! You’re no match for him!”
Ogremon: “Shut up! You don’t get to be only one to show off!”
Ogremon: “He’s nothing! If you want a real challenge, it’s right here!”
MetalEtemon: “Wha..?”
SaberLeomon: “Ogremon, don’t be ridiculous — you’re no match for him!”
Ogremon: “I could take on this tin can if I want to!”
[Mimi tries to reign Ogremon in]
Mimi: “NO! With your injuries, don’t! Stop!”
Mimi: “NO! You’re in no shape to fight. Now stop it, and quit trying to be a hero!”
Mimi, I don’t think you understand Ogremon’s brand…
MetalEtemon: “Shut up! Don’t worry – I’ll send you all to the other world together!”
MetalEtemon: “No, everyone’s welcome. As a matter of fact, little darling, today I’m offerin’ a special group discount! Besides, it saves me time to destroy all you at once.”
[MetalEtemon uses Dark Spirits Deluxe to attack Mimi, but SaberLeomon jumps in the way to block it. It doesn’t end well for him]
Jou: “SaberLeomon!”
Joe: (angry) “Okay, that does it!”
Joe, I don’t think you understand your own brand…
[Mimi… uh… “sees to” the fallen SaberLeomon?]
Mimi: “No… Not again…”
Mimi: “Leomon, wake up! Please tell me you’re all right!”

Zudomon uses a unique attack, Hammer Boomerang, to hit MetalEtemon. In the dub, this attack is just his standard “Vulcan’s Hammer”.

[Zudomon takes on MetalEtemon]
MetalEtemon: “Useless! It’s useless! My body has a full coat of Chrome Digizoid metal!”
Zudomon: “Then how about this?! (Hammer Boomerang)” *throws the hammer like it’s a boomerang*
MetalEtemon: “Are you an idiot? It’s useless no matter what!” *direct hammer impact and cracking of aforementioned full coat* “How?! My Chrome Digizoid metal coating!!”
Zudomon: “I’ll tell you: this ‘Thor’s Hammer’ is also made of the same Chrome Digizoid.”
MetalEtemon: “Ha! As you can see, that didn’t even phase me! My metal’s Chrome-ah Digizoid, the absolute strongest metal there is!”
Zudomon: “Then maybe you’d like this! (Vulcan’s Hammer)” *throws the hammer like it’s a boomerang*
MetalEtemon: “No matter what you attempt, it’s useless… ‘cause I’m invincible!” *direct hammer impact and cracking* “I’m breakin’ apart. This is terrible – I lost my lustre! Why does this keep happenin’ to me?!”
Zudmon: “Because my hammer is made of Chrome Digizoid metal. I’m afraid it isn’t your moment to shine!”
MetalEtemon said “Chrome-ah” instead of “chrome” in the dub, for some reason. Just part of his charm!

In the dub, SaberLeomon uses “Twin Fang” to steal the kill when the attack is Nail Crusher in the original.

[MetalEtemon dies]
MetalEtemon: “You’re kidding!”
MetalEtemon: “You’ll pay big time!”
You’ll be hearing from the recording label’s lawyers!
[Meanwhile, back at Pinocchimon’s house-is-a-robot shindig, the robot house has the upper hand. Angemon implores Takeru to run away]
Takeru: “B-but…”
T.K.: “Okay! Good luck!”
[Puppetmon flees. A RedVegiemon is in his path of egress]
Pinocchimon: (cheering for his house) “Haha, do it! Do it!” *laughs*
RedVegiemon: “Please, take me with you!”
Pinocchimon: “Shut up! You’ll just slow me down!” (Flying Cross Cutter)
Puppetmon: “Ha ha! I’m out of here! Happy housewarming!”
RedVegiemon: “Take me, too!”
Puppetmon: “Are you joking? Do I look like I want your company? Take this!” (Puppet Pummel)

Pinocchimon has another named attack: Flying Cross Cutter, in which he throws the ‘cross’ on his back (it’s the control thingy for the strings on a puppet). The dub calls this his usual “Puppet Pummel”.

[Pinocchimon hears someone sneaking up on him. It’s MetalGarurumon, looking less-than-happy to see him]
Pinocchimon: “Who’s there?! … Ah! We meet at a great place! Just beat him [WarGreymon] up, like you did the other day.”
Puppetmon: “Who’s that behind me? … Well, it’s about time! Get them, do some major damage, and I want no foul-ups!”
[MetalGarurumon doesn’t respond to him]
Pinocchimon: “Hm..? Listen to what I say!” *attackes his puppet strings to MetalGarurumon* “Now go! Beat them! … Ah, why..? Why aren’t my techniques working?”
Puppetmon: “Huh..? What’s with you? Daydreaming again, huh?” *strings* “Now, MetalGarurumon, sock it to ‘em! Hey, this isn’t working here! Remember: you’re supposed to obey me! I’m the boss!”
… Is MetalGarurumon known for daydreaming… ever..?
[Yamato steps out from the shadows]
Yamato: “Of course. There’s no way he’d listen to someone who so casually kills their friends.”
Matt: “Think again. You’re washed up, Puppetmon. Nobody’s going to be on your side because you don’t care about them.”
He DID call the RedVegiemon his ‘friends’, but how did Yamato know that? Was he just hanging around, letting his friends get their asses handed to them by a house?
Pinocchimon: “What?! You’re making me mad! Everyone just listen to what I say!”
Puppetmon: “I’m still strong! And it doesn’t matter what they think. They’re still going to do what I tell them to do!”

As usual, MetalGarurumon’s Cocytus Breath, which he breathes from his mouth, is “Metal Wolf Claw” in the dub.

[Pinocchimon attacks MetalGarurumon and gets one-shotted for his efforts. As he lies dying, he wonders:]
Pinocchimon: “Jureimon… what was I missing..?”
Puppetmon: “Cherrymon, what is it that those kids have… that I don’t?”
Jureimon’s disembodied voice: “FRIENDS!”
Also shirts.
[Sora sees Yamato before he has a chance to leave again]
Sora: “Yamato!”
Sora: “Thank you, Matt!”
[Pinocchimon’s house died, then Yamato fucked off again. Elsewhere, Leomon follows suit. On the dying, I mean. I guess also on the other thing, in a way]
Leomon: “Don’t be sad. I will be reborn again in the Town of Beginnings.”
Leomon: “You have no reason to worry. I must go now and rejuvenate myself at the Primary Village.”
Okay, but I feel like you could rejuvenate here? I know it’s not exactly a spa, but maybe the water is still running in the kitchen?
Leomon: “I’m sorry, Ogremon. Until then, I guess I’ll have to hold off on settling things with you…”
Ogremon: (weeping) “Leomon…”
Leomon: “Ogremon, I’m very sorry. Now is not the time for us to resolve things, but I promise we will meet up again.”
Ogremon: (weeping) “You’re a good rival…”
Aww, I like this adaptation a lot… He IS a good rival!
[Leomon dies. Jou and Mimi resolve to find the Village of Beginnings]
Ogremon: “The Village of Beginnings is dead.”
Jou and Mimi: “Huh?”
Ogremon: “I recently went to the Village of Beginnings. It’s completely changed thanks to the Dark Masters.”
Ogremon: “There’s only one problem: it doesn’t exist. There isn’t anything there; it’s a ghost town. It was destroyed after the Dark Masters poisoned it with their evil. No one is left.”
[The Village of Beginnings won’t be restored until the Dark Masters are defeated]
Ogremon: “What will you do?”
Jou: “We need to restore the Village of Beginnings.”
Gomamon: “I don’t want to just stay here and do nothing!”
Jou: “Mimi, it’s hard, but right now we have no choice but to defeat the Dark Masters.”
Palmon: “Hey, Mimi, let me fight too. If our friends will die even if we don’t fight, then it’s better to fight.”
Ogremon: “Any ideas?”
Joe: “I say we throw them out and then save the village.”
Gomamon: “That would be great, and it’s better than sitting around and doing nothing.”
Joe: “Okay Mimi, the only way out of this mess is to defeat the Dark Masters. Are you up for it?”
Palmon: “We need your help, Mimi. Please say yes. For Leomon and everyone — the whole Digiworld needs us!”
Palmon’s “if our friends will die even if we don’t fight, then it’s better to fight” was a really good point, and it’s a shame it wasn’t adapted. The dub line is effective, I think, but it doesn’t carry Palmon’s courage and resolve the same way.
Mimi: “I understand. I’ll do anything to restore the Village of Beginnings. So, Ogremon, will you help, too?”
Ogremon: “… Keh! I have no intention of teaming up with you lot, but I still have to settle things with Leomon, so I guess I have no choice…”
Jou: “Thank you. That’s reassuring!”
Mimi: “Yes, you’re right, Palmon. Snivelling is for babies, and I’ve done too much of that already. Ogremon, are you going to come along with us? Hmm?”
Ogremon: “Huh? Well, I have no intention of joining forces with you crazy kids. However, if we all happen to be going the same way, I’m stuck tagging along.”
Joe: “Don’t worry, Ogremon. We won’t blow your cover.”
“… anymore…”
Narrator: “Thus, the Children began to walk their own paths. Taichi and the others can’t let their guard down, either. The new enemy was already closing in.”
Mimi: “Some call this a crossroads in life. In the past, I might have avoided it by going to the mall, but you know? It feels good to do the right thing, even though at times, that might be a DANGEROUS thing, which we may soon find out!”
Going to the mall could be the right thing. Or it could be a DANGEROUS thing. There’s room for error.
Dub Narrator: “The Digidestined are gathering allies, but separated, will they be able to survive the combined attack of the Dark Masters? Tune in to the next Digimon: Digital Monsters.”
There’s only two left – how bad can it be?!
The Digi-Verdict
Again, the script is translated faithfully with most of the changes being in the dub’s characterisations, which are either appropriate cultural adaptations (MetalEtemon) or just consistent with what’s already been established. Even then, these episodes are a bit more fair to Joe and Mimi than previous ones. When Joe suggested they all flee, it was out of a sense of responsibility, assessing the threat, and trusting SaberLeomon’s judgement. The dub didn’t portray him as a coward in this situation; he actually came across as a leader, as he should have. Likewise, Mimi isn’t being selfish or acting unaware of what’s going on around her. Rather, her fear and pain are treated seriously, as they should be for the tone of this arc.
Ogremon… I love Ogremon. I love dub Ogremon. Beau Billingslee does his best to deliver Ogremon’s sorrow at Leomon’s death. I don’t think he quite hit it, but that’s saying very little because I’m sure that kind of scene is VERY difficult when doing a voice like that. And the voice still sounds amazing. And, of course, some of the tears shed were over the fact that we will not hear Paul St Peter’s Leomon again in Digimon: Digital Monsters. He does return as Leomon in Digimon Tamers.
Finally, all of the tears forever will be shed at the loss of the musical icon MetalEtemon and Richard Epcar’s performance as him. Epcar does return as Etemon in Digimon Frontier, but I don’t know if he does the Elvis impersonation because I didn’t watch Frontier. Rock on forever, brothers. ⧵m/
All in all, I give it a B, for ‘booty’, which MetalEtemon hit someone with his, but it was cut from the dub.
Damn I’m dumb I confused these two episodes. So here’s my other comment with MOAR STUFF ADDED TO IT.
This is the best article. I dont know why but I really like it, it has all the good I want. Also lots of small details and comments that let me truly dimension the differences and similarities!
Also this is a very good episode in general. I love Atsushi Maekawa. His work on Precure was top notch.
Also I love Beau, he’s awesome and should be in more everything, really.
Do you want me to remove your other comment from the other episode?
And thanks, glad you liked it! It’s all thanks to Richard Epcar and Beau Billingslee
